However, there has been no sense of other countries considering leaving, according to one negotiator.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have not heard anyone else make those noises in this process, and I don\u2019t think it will be a chain reaction,\u201d the negotiator said.<\/p>\n
Other officials close to the process also said they had not caught wind of any other country wavering.<\/p>\n
Delegates at COP29 have generally been reassured by the fact that the last time Mr Trump pulled the US out of the Paris Agreement, no other countries followed suit, despite fears of a domino effect.<\/p>\n
On Sunday, one of Azerbaijan\u2019s top officials told Sky News the US team remained \u201cconstructive\u201d<\/strong>, while the US climate envoy has said the fight is \u201cbigger than one election\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\nBut everyone meeting in Baku stadium for the talks is bracing for the US to disappear from future COP summits.<\/p>\n
The COP29 presidency team found itself embroiled in another diplomatic spat yesterday when French climate minister Agnes Pannier-Runacher cancelled her trip.<\/p>\n
Azerbaijan\u2019s President Ilham Aliyev had accused France of \u201ccrimes\u201d in its overseas territories in the Caribbean.<\/p>\n
Tensions between the two are long-standing due to Paris\u2019 support for rival Armenia.<\/p>\n
\u201cRegardless of any bilateral disagreements, the COP should be a place where all parties feel at liberty to come and
negotiate on climate action,\u201d European Union climate commissioner Wopke Hoekstra said in response, in a post on X.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe COP Presidency has a particular responsibility to enable and enhance that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
But it\u2019s not been all doom and gloom in Baku.
